Never Weather is my original project that I lead from the drums. I wrote most of the music for the record, and I'm really proud of how it's come out. A lot of the material is my personal reflections and commentaries on living in a world aware of climate change, and how it affects us both physically and emotionally.
You can listen and BUY it on Bandcamp! Send me a message and let me know what you think!
Lessons.com has selected me as providing the "Best Drum Lessons" in Oakland for 2019. I have recently had the good fortune of being able to teach out of my own studio in West Oakland more often and it's been a total blessing. I'm setup for lessons really well here, and I have several other instruments ready to go, so that I can actually play music with my drum students and they feel like they've made music each lesson, instead of just learning about a certain drum technique. I believe that's one of the things that sets me apart, and I'm happy to provide that experience to all who want it. Feel free to reach out on my contact form if you'd like more information or want to set up your first lesson!
This Friday 4/5 at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley, I will be performing along side two other amazing drummers and band leaders. Alan Hall will be leading Ratatet, (and I will play vibes in that group), Jeremy Steinkoler will be leading his group Mo'Fone, and I will close out the show with Never Weather!
The 3 of us drummers are also leading a workshop Sunday at the CJC about groovemaking, and band leading as a drummer. Hope you can join us, tell a friend!
I'm honored to announce that I am officially endorsed by BlueHaus Mallets. Brad Howard at BlueHaus has the know how of an engineer, the sensitivity of an experienced musician, and the patience of a saint. He has worked tirelessly to create my custom vibraphone/marimba crossover mallet, and I'm excited to share some videos over the next few weeks that feature me playing these great mallets. The New album is called Heroes, Saints and Clowns. It features a whole new batch of original pieces composed by the drummer and band leader, Alan Hall! My favorite tracks that feature the vibes are Gratitude, and Lane and Joanna. I hope you enjoy this music, feel free to pass this link on to your friends as well!
The Hall of Mirrors Ensemble is the Octet expansion of the Ratatet. This tune, written by drummer-composer-bandleader extraordinaire, Alan Hall, is called Big Empty Shoes in a Tiny and Very White House. It's a wonderfully angular piece that equal parts beautiful and strange, check it out!
Never Weather was recently featured on a show sponsored by Jazz in the Neighborhood at the Community Music Center in San Francisco. This show was the debut of 3 new bands by young composers Ian Faquini, Erika Oba, and myself. Andy Gilbert wrote a nice response to the show for SF Classical Voice. Check it out HERE!
This woman is a tremendous inspiration to me and probably all percussionists today. She is a Scottish percussionist and she is completely deaf! It may seem ironic that she's giving a lecture on how to truly listen but it's very eye opening to us regular folks who think we hear just perfectly fine. This really shows that you never truly appreciate something until it's gone, and to her she doesn't accept that being deaf means you can't hear. You just have to listen harder and think about how you actually go about hearing. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
