This woman is a tremendous inspiration to me and probably all percussionists today. She is a Scottish percussionist and she is completely deaf! It may seem ironic that she's giving a lecture on how to truly listen but it's very eye opening to us regular folks who think we hear just perfectly fine. This really shows that you never truly appreciate something until it's gone, and to her she doesn't accept that being deaf means you can't hear. You just have to listen harder and think about how you actually go about hearing. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
This is a wonderful video from a TED convention. If you're not familiar with ted.com do yourself a favor and check it out, it's basically a list of videos from these conventions where they ask professionals in a multitude of fields to give a speech or presentation about what they do in hopes to educate the public in some unique way. This particular video is Stefon Harris giving a presentation with a band about the sacred space that is the bandstand. Strangely enough it is a speech at an event having something to do with behavioral finance, but the point here is that you don't have to like jazz or even be a musician to learn something from observing the creative process of the bandstand first hand!
